Background of the Study
Teenage pregnancy presents significant health, social, and economic challenges, particularly in low-resource settings such as Jigawa State. Adolescent mothers are at higher risk of pregnancy-related complications, poor maternal health outcomes, and limited access to healthcare services (WHO, 2024). The presence of strong family support has been identified as a critical factor in mitigating these challenges by improving access to healthcare, reducing psychological distress, and enhancing overall well-being.
Family support plays a vital role in ensuring teenage mothers receive adequate antenatal care, nutritional support, and emotional encouragement. In many traditional African societies, teenage mothers often rely on family members, particularly parents and grandparents, for financial and childcare assistance (UNICEF, 2024). However, in some cases, cultural stigma and family rejection increase their vulnerability, leading to poor health outcomes and a higher likelihood of dropping out of school.
Jigawa State, characterized by high rates of adolescent pregnancy and low maternal health indicators, presents an urgent need to explore the extent to which family support can improve teenage mothers' health. This study aims to examine the influence of family support on maternal health outcomes, considering emotional, financial, and healthcare-related assistance provided to adolescent mothers.
Statement of the Problem
Teenage mothers in Jigawa State face significant health risks, including pregnancy-related complications such as anemia, obstructed labor, and preeclampsia. Many adolescent mothers do not receive adequate antenatal care due to financial constraints, lack of awareness, and social stigma. Additionally, the psychological burden of early motherhood can lead to stress, depression, and feelings of isolation (UNFPA, 2024).
While family support has been identified as a key factor in improving maternal health outcomes, there is limited research on its specific impact on teenage mothers in Jigawa State. Some families provide strong support, ensuring adolescent mothers receive proper care, while others reject or neglect them due to cultural and religious beliefs. This study seeks to examine the role of family support in improving teenage mothers' health and to identify effective strategies for strengthening family involvement.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of family support on the health outcomes of teenage mothers in Jigawa State.
To identify challenges that teenage mothers face in accessing family support.
To propose strategies for enhancing family involvement in improving teenage maternal health.

Research Hypotheses
Family support significantly improves maternal health outcomes among teenage mothers in Jigawa State.
Cultural stigma and financial constraints limit the support teenage mothers receive from their families.
Strengthening family involvement in maternal care will lead to better health outcomes for teenage mothers.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on teenage mothers in Jigawa State and the role of family support in their health outcomes. The research will examine various forms of family support, including financial assistance, emotional encouragement, and healthcare facilitation.
